5% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2022 Château Pibran might be the finest vintage I’ve tasted. Based on 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, it has a wonderfully pure nose of cassis and assorted blue fruits, lots of tobacco, crushed stone, and graphite nuances, medium to full body, ripe tannins, and a beautiful sense of freshness and purity that keeps this ripe, concentrated beauty balanced and light on its feet. The élevage will span 18 months in 40% new barrels, with the balance in once-used.

The 2022 Pibran is bright, punchy and full of character. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, cinnamon and tobacco abound. Bright acids perk up the finish. This mid-weight, Merlot-driven Pauillac offers tons of immediacy and allure. I imagine it will be very easy to drink upon release.

Smells beautiful, like pot pourri, delicately fragrant, floral and black fruited with hints of cedar, toast and liquorice. Mouthwatering acidity – pure and crystalline joins quite rich, ripe and plush red fruit – strawberries, plums and cherries with a soft chalky undertone. Straight and well defined, this has a smoothness that is lovely with detail to the frame. Will be lovely to drink after ageing with an enjoyable menthol freshness at the end. Ageing 18 months in French oak, 40% new, 60% one wine.

Exhibiting aromas of dark berries, plums, petals and burning embers, the 2022 Pibran is medium to full-bodied, taut and lively, with bright acids and a chalky finish. It should flesh out nicely with further élevage.

The 2022 Pibran is matured in 40% new oak. It has quite an opulent bouquet, perhaps with just a touch of sur-maturité, a very slight fig note that might well be subsumed during the barrel maturation. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins. Quite a solid Pibran, plenty of freshness on the finish. This is a Pibran that will require 3-4 year in bottle.
